Two Paths, One Standard of Excellence

UDJC offers two distinct paths in dressage competition: The Benchmark Path follows the classical structure with tests from Level E to S, requiring qualification to move up. The Ability Path is a newly developed concept that focuses entirely on the rider’s effectiveness and the horse’s rideability — regardless of breed or gaits. Both paths are judged by licensed professionals and promote fair, structured rider development.

Benchmark tests

Benchmark tests in UDJC are standard dressage tests offered from Level E through Level S, designed to reflect the horse's current ability, quality and correctness with clear, progressive expectations. Riders must qualify at each level before moving up, ensuring they demonstrate true readiness and correct basics before advancing — unlike traditional systems where anyone can sign up for any level regardless of skill.

Ability Tests

Ability tests in UDJC focus solely on the rider’s skill and the horse’s rideability — ignoring the horse’s quality or gaits. No qualification is required to enter, and each test consists of a group-based free riding section followed by feedback from the judge and a short individual pattern. Strong performances in ability tests can be used to qualify for specific benchmark levels.

Young Horse Dressage

UDJC’s young horse dressage classes are designed to evaluate age-appropriate development, focusing on balance, rhythm, and willingness; not perfection. Horses are judged on potential, rideability, and correct training without being overfaced, creating a fair and supportive environment for future stars.

Group & Individual Tests

Group Ability Tests offer live judge feedback and focus on rider education in a supportive environment, helping riders gain confidence and polish basics. Individual Benchmark Tests are traditionally scored and offer a more competitive setting with detailed, structured evaluations.

Equipment & Arena Setup

Standard 20x40 or 20x60 arenas are used depending on the level. Riders compete in snaffle bridles through most divisions, with double bridles optional at the higher levels. Traditional, clean turnout is encouraged.
